When projects exceed 5 cm in depth, pouring resin in one go can cause overheating, trapped bubbles, and a compromised finish. Controlled layering allows the resin to cure evenly, reduces the risk of thermal cracks, and helps maintain optical clarity. It’s especially important for larger logs or pieces where volume and thickness challenge even specialist resins.
Choosing the Right Resin for Deep Casts
Not all resins are suitable for deep pour techniques. Select products designed specifically for thick pours, such as “Epoxytable 10-Ten”, which allows casting up to 10 cm in a single layer without undue heat buildup. For pours between 2 cm and 5 cm, “EpoxyTable 5-Five” is ideal. If you’re new to resin work, a starter kit like the “River-Table” kit provides clear instructions and the right materials.
Practical Guide to Layering Resin
- Work in layers no thicker than your chosen resin’s safe maximum per application (usually 5–10 cm for specialist products).
- Allow each layer to partially cure — typically 6–8 hours — before adding the next. This helps bonding and reduces the risk of overheating.
- Remove any surface bubbles between layers using a heat gun, if recommended by the resin manufacturer.
- Maintain a dust-free environment to keep your log project clear and glossy.
When Layering Becomes Essential
Layering is crucial for logs and projects thicker than 5 cm or with large surface areas over 100 cm. It’s also best practice for ambitious river tables and artistic pieces requiring maximum clarity and structural stability.
