Epoxy mastic is a two-part repair putty used to fill cracks, rebuild damaged tile edges and replace missing grout before a floor primer is applied. It cures to a hard, stable material that helps create a flat substrate, reducing the risk of voids or movement under subsequent layers. For tile-over-tile installations, this step is useful when the existing surface is sound but has localised defects.

Can Epoxy Mastic Repair Tiles Before Priming?

If you are planning to lay new tiles over an existing tiled floor, localised repairs can make the difference between a smooth finish and problems later. Epoxy mastic is particularly practical because it can be mixed in small batches and used on vertical tile faces, so individual cracks or missing grout lines can be dealt with without resurfacing the whole floor.

What epoxy mastic can and cannot repair

Epoxy mastic is suited to filling cracks, rebuilding small areas of damaged tile and replacing missing grout. Once cured, it forms a hard, stable material that can be dressed back to leave a flat surface ready for primer.

Preparing repairs before priming

After the mastic has cured, check the repair for flatness. Any high spots should be scraped back or levelled so the primer can be applied evenly across the tile surface. Remove dust and loose material before moving on.

For tile-over-tile projects, a water-based two-component primer such as Epoxyprimer can be applied over the prepared tiles to improve adhesion for the next layer. Follow the product cure times before applying the following coat.

When this matters

This repair step matters most when the existing tiled floor is fundamentally sound but has isolated defects. If you leave a cracked tile or missing grout under a new layer of tiles, the finished surface may not sit flat and repairs may become more difficult later. Spot-filling with epoxy mastic is often more practical than removing and replacing the whole floor for minor damage.
