Can I Use These Membrane Products Outside the Van?
← Back to Anti-Infiltration Membrane for Campervans
Quick answer
Heavy-duty geotextile membranes and plastic fixing pegs are suitable for outdoor use beneath patios, pathways, and retreat areas attached to a campervan. The woven polypropylene membrane helps stabilise the ground and reduce weed growth, while UV-stabilised pegs hold it securely in soil or compacted sub-base. This combination provides a firm, even foundation before adding a resin bound surface, aggregate, or paving layer. Both products are intended for ground-level preparation rather than exposed finished surfaces.

If a campervan patio or external retreat area is part of your build, you don’t need a separate indoor-only membrane system. The same geotextile fabric used inside a conversion can work outside, provided it is covered by a surface layer and fixed well.
What can be used outdoors?
The most relevant products for exterior work are the Groundtex woven weed membrane and its matching plastic fixing pegs. The membrane is a woven polypropylene sheet that covers 20m², which suits small patios and retreat areas beside a campervan. The pegs are UV-stabilised, weather-resistant, and designed with a barbed spike to grip soil or compacted sub-base.

Laying the membrane outside a campervan
Clear the area of loose debris and level the ground as much as possible. Roll the Groundtex Woven Weed Membrane 2m x 10m over the prepared surface, then secure it at intervals with fixing pegs before adding your surface layer. A 10-peg pack is usually the more economical choice for a full sheet, while single pegs can be useful for small areas or edge repairs.
When this matters
Outdoor ground next to a campervan is exposed to more weather, foot traffic and drainage pressure than an internal floor. A heavy-duty geotextile helps maintain a stable base and reduces the chance of weed growth disturbing the area. If the retreat area will be walked on regularly, anchoring the membrane with UV-stabilised pegs is a more practical option than leaving it loose.

Once you know an anti-infiltration membrane can be used outdoors, the next step is choosing the right size and securing method for your campervan retreat area. A woven geotextile with ground anchors gives a tidier, more stable base and fits naturally into a wider campervan anti-infiltration membrane plan.
