Where methacrylic primers work well

Methacrylic primers such as Resinstone are formulated for absorbent surfaces. Concrete floors, driveways, stamped concrete and similar porous substrates allow the resin to penetrate and create a stable base. This makes them useful for sealing and protecting before a floor polish or topcoat is applied. The benefit is rapid drying and good mechanical resistance on the right surface.

Surfaces to avoid or treat with caution

Loose aggregate, existing gravel and non-absorbent surfaces are not recommended for methacrylic primers. The material relies on capillary absorption to bond; if the substrate cannot take in the primer, adhesion can be compromised. Smooth ceramic tiles, certain dense screeds and non-porous metals or plastics usually need a different primer type. For those conditions, a universal water-based epoxy primer such as Epoxyprimer is formulated to bond to concrete, tiles, timber and screeds.

When this matters most

The distinction becomes important on mixed-surface projects or when you are refreshing an existing floor. If one area is absorbent concrete and another is glazed tile, using a single methacrylic primer across both can lead to uneven bonding. For terrazzo flooring, if the base is cementitious and absorbent, a methacrylic primer may be suitable, but any polished or sealed layer should be assessed first.
