Hot or Cold Water for Resin Stains?

It’s easy to panic when you spot resin on your clothes or soft furnishings. Knowing whether to use hot or cold water can make all the difference in removing resin stains from fabric.

Why Cold Water Is Best

Always use cold water when treating resin stains on fabric. Hot water can actually set resin particles deeper into the fibres, making the stain much harder to shift. Rinsing with cold water helps to prevent the resin from hardening or bonding more firmly to the material. Make sure to act quickly, blotting up any excess resin before gently rinsing the affected area with cold water.

Step-by-Step Removal Guidance

  • First, scrape off any excess resin carefully using a blunt edge, taking care not to spread it further.
  • Blot the area gently with a damp, cold microfibre cloth—avoid rubbing, which can push resin further into the fibres. Packs such as the Coloured Microfibre Cloths are ideal for this purpose.
  • Rinse the stain under cold, running water from the back of the fabric to push out the residue.
  • If needed, apply a gentle cleaning solution such as the Strong Technical Degreaser for Resin Projects to help lift remaining traces, then rinse thoroughly with cold water again.
  • Repeat as necessary and launder as usual once the majority of resin has been removed.

When This Matters Most

Using cold water is especially important with fresh spills, high-use fabrics (like upholstery or workwear), and delicate cloths where permanent marks are especially unwanted. Prompt action and the right temperature can be key to a successful outcome.
