Preparing the board for resin

MDF is absorbent, so pouring resin directly onto an untreated board can draw moisture from the mix and cause uneven curing or edge swelling. A simple sealing step helps. Use a suitable primer or sealant on the front, back and especially the cut edges, then allow it to dry fully before your first resin layer.

• Seal or prime the surface and edges before pouring
• Let the sealer dry completely before adding resin
• Work on a level, dust-free surface

Once sealed, check the board is clean and dry. This is particularly important for beach pours, where sand and pigments need to settle without catching on loose fibres.

Working with resin and mixed media

The 6mm thickness gives enough rigidity for layering without feeling heavy. For ocean effects, start with a clear or tinted base layer, then add whites, blues and metallic pigments while the resin is still workable. A surfboard shape works well for directional wave patterns, where the resin is moved along the long axis to mimic water movement.

You can also add dried flowers, crushed glass or fine sand, but keep inclusions light enough to stay suspended near the surface. Avoid overloading the centre, as that can affect how evenly the resin levels across the curved outline.

When this matters

This board is most useful when you want a recognisable surf theme without needing to cut, sand and shape a blank from scratch. It suits small wall art, decorative signs and coastal gifts. If you prefer a different silhouette or need a larger panel, check the dimensions carefully before planning your pour, because the 60 x 19 cm size is best suited to compact, horizontal compositions.
