What to look for in an indoor floor-coating resin

Not every clear epoxy is comfortable to use indoors. For enclosed rooms, look for a formula described as odourless or low-odour, preferably with reduced solvent content. Products such as Icrystal clear epoxy resin are designed around this requirement, with a self-levelling, high-gloss finish and the ability to build a coat up to 1.5cm per application where a deeper fill is needed.

• Clarity and self-levelling: the coating should spread evenly and dry clear without excessive rippling or clouding.
• Scratch resistance: a hard-wearing surface helps reduce the look of light scuffs and day-to-day wear.
• UV protection: indoor spaces with strong natural light benefit from UV filters that slow yellowing and keep the finish brighter for longer.
• Mix ratio and working time: simpler ratios and clear pot-life guidance make the job easier to manage.

Application and preparation advice

An odourless resin still needs a clean, dry, sound surface to bond properly. Remove dust, grease and loose material first. If the substrate is smooth or previously coated, follow the manufacturer’s preparation advice and test a small inconspicuous area before coating the whole floor. On substrates where adhesion is uncertain — including some vinyl floors or flexible coverings — a test patch will show whether the resin remains bonded after curing.

Mix exactly according to the stated ratio, scrape the sides of the mixing container, and pour in sections so the resin can self-level before it begins to thicken. Use a spreader or squeegee suited to the coat thickness, and leave the room undisturbed for the full cure time. Even low-odour resin should be used with adequate ventilation and the protective equipment recommended on the product instructions.

When this matters

An odourless clear epoxy is most valuable when the coated space is used by people who are sensitive to strong solvent smells, or when it is impractical to vacate the room for several days. That makes it a practical choice for kitchens, hallways, studios, shops and other occupied indoor spaces. The lower fume level can make the coating process more manageable, but it does not remove the need for preparation, ventilation and safe handling.
