Wooden subfloors are primed before epoxy flooring by applying a low-viscosity resin that soaks into the timber, stabilises the fibres, and reduces the chance of moisture movement. EpoxyWood is often recommended for this because it penetrates dry wood deeply and provides a waterproofing effect, while a universal water-based primer such as Epoxyprimer can support adhesion on properly prepared timber. The result is a firmer, less absorbent base for the subsequent resin coat.

A timber subfloor does not behave like concrete, so the primer choice and preparation routine make a noticeable difference. The aim is to seal and stiffen the wood enough for the epoxy layer to grip evenly without drawing resin away from the surface.

What to use on dry timber

Dry wood benefits from a penetrating resin rather than a film-forming coating alone. EpoxyWood is formulated with an ultra-low viscosity, which helps it travel into the pores and reinforce the timber from within. That can be useful on older floorboards, plywood and other timber bases that will receive an epoxy floor.

Preparation steps before priming

The condition of the wood matters before any primer is applied. Start with a clean, dry and sanded surface to give the resin the best chance to bond.

Check the timber is thoroughly dry and free from loose fibres, dust, wax, oil or old flaking finishes
Sand lightly to open the grain, then remove all dust
Apply the primer in thin, even coats using a brush, roller or spatula according to the product
Leave the primer to cure fully before applying the epoxy floor layer

Follow the specific overcoating window on the product you choose. Rushing this stage can result in poor adhesion and uneven resin absorption.

When this matters

Priming wooden subfloors becomes especially important when timber meets another flooring material, when the wood is old or absorbent, or when the room may experience changes in humidity. In these situations, the primer helps create a more predictable surface so the epoxy layer does not soak in unevenly or lose grip at transitions.

This step is also relevant for overlapping floor systems, where a stable base at the timber stage supports the layers that follow.
