The role of a water-based epoxy primer
A two-component water-based primer is designed to maximise bonding between the substrate and the resin coating. A product like Epoxyprimer is suitable for concrete, timber, ceramic tiles and screeds, and can be applied by roller, brush or spatula.
Because it is water-based and odourless, it is more comfortable to use indoors. Allow 24 to 48 hours at room temperature before applying the next resin layer.
When this matters most: surface preparation before coating
Even the best primer cannot compensate for a dirty or unstable floor. Start by removing loose material, grease, and old coatings. For ceramic tiles, degrease and lightly abrade the glaze if the manufacturer recommends it; for concrete, fill cracks and allow moisture levels to settle.
- Vacuum and wipe away all dust before priming.
- Mask edges and expansion joints to keep the resin system neat.
- Mix the primer exactly according to the stated ratio and avoid working in very cold or damp conditions.
Once the primer has cured, a clear epoxy such as “Icrystal” or “Trasparente” can be poured over the prepared surface, but the adhesion layer is what keeps the whole system in place.
