How UV stabilisers work in quartz resin coatings

In quartz floor finishes, UV stabilisers are included in some clear epoxy and two-component polyurethane formulations. They do not block all ultraviolet light, but they help slow the chemical changes that cause clouding and yellowing. This is especially relevant for clear topcoats and pale quartz blends where discolouration is more visible.

One example is “Prolux” – PU coating for tiles, concrete, plastic and metal, which is formulated with UV resistance as well as abrasion and weathering protection.

Choosing a UV-stable resin for quartz floors

Not all resin products offer the same level of UV resistance. Before buying, check the technical information for terms like UV stabiliser, UV filter, non-yellowing or weather resistant. For clear quartz finishes, a transparent epoxy with UV protection can maintain clarity indoors. For exterior driveways and paths, a two-component polyurethane may be more appropriate.

• Clear interior quartz finishes: look for a UV-filtered transparent epoxy.
• Exterior or wet areas: a weather-resistant polyurethane can provide broader protection.
• Coloured aggregate or pebble floors: select a clear binder described as UV-stable to keep the aggregate colour true.

When UV protection matters

UV protection becomes a priority when the quartz floor includes clear or lightly tinted coats, or when the surface receives direct sun through windows, skylights or open outdoor exposure. In a windowless interior with an opaque pigmented coat, yellowing is less noticeable. With pale or decorative quartz, however, choosing a UV-stable resin early can avoid uneven colour shift across the floor.
