Resin Colourant Percentage Guide: Achieving Translucent or Opaque Effects

Selecting the right amount of resin colourant is essential for producing either see-through or solid colour finishes in your epoxy projects. A precise ratio makes all the difference to your result.

How Much Colourant for Translucent or Opaque Resin?

For delicate, light-transmitting (translucent) results, use around 1% colourant by weight, calculated against your mixed resin. This creates a gentle tint without overloading the mixture. For richer, non-see-through (opaque) finishes, increase the colourant up to 5% of the total resin weight. Exceeding this can negatively affect resin curing and clarity.

  • Translucent finish: ~1% colourant
  • Opaque result: up to 5% colourant

Always consult your colourant’s guidance, as some products are highly concentrated and may need only a few drops.

Choosing and Mixing Resin Colourants

Not all pigment types behave the same. Liquid colourants, such as Colourfun, blend quickly and are ideal for both subtle and solid shades. Paste or powder pigments may be more suitable for very vibrant colours or special effects, but should always be added gradually while mixing thoroughly for even dispersal.

Start with less pigment than you think you need—test a small amount, as you can add but not remove pigment if you go too far. Keep in mind that some resins, like Art Pro Deluxe, permit up to 5% pigment by weight without issues, providing flexibility for creative projects.

When Resin Colourant Ratios Matter Most

Getting the ratio right is crucial when clarity, depth, or even curing is important. Too much pigment can leave resin uncured, tacky, or cloudy. In artistic pieces—such as jewellery, pour paintings, or tabletop river effects—balancing translucency and opacity often makes or breaks the design.
