If you’re planning to pour epoxy resin for a shower tray, you might wonder whether it’s best done all at once or in controlled layers. The answer depends on the depth of your tray and the type of finish required.
Why Layering Is Important for Deep Pours
Pours exceeding a few centimetres in thickness can generate significant heat (known as exotherm) during curing. Too much heat may cause internal bubbles, surface imperfections, or even compromise the structural integrity of the tray. For deep trays, it’s recommended to pour the resin in layers. Allowing each layer to cure before pouring the next limits the risk of overheating and reduces trapped bubbles, resulting in a clearer, more durable finish.
Resins such as Epoxytable 10-Ten Deep Pour Epoxy are formulated to enable thicker layers (up to 10cm per pour), but even then, large or heavy casts may require a layered approach for safety and quality.
Single Pour for Coatings and Thin Layers
If you are applying just a surface coating or a shallow pour (typically below 2cm), a single application is usually sufficient. Most high-quality resins designed for surface finishing, like Trasparente Multipurpose Epoxy Resin, will cure smoothly and level out, provided that the manufacturer’s thickness recommendations are followed.
Always refer to the resin’s technical guidelines for maximum pour depth per layer before starting your project. This avoids issues relating to incomplete curing or excessive bubble formation.
When This Matters
- You’re creating a deep or custom-cast shower tray and need a flawless, stable outcome.
- Your workspace is warm or the tray dimensions are large, increasing the risk of overheating.
- Transparent or decorative trays where clarity and finish quality are noticeable and important.
