← Back to How much dye can I add to the resin?

Adding the right amount of dye to resin is key to getting vivid, even and reliable results. Whether aiming for a translucent wash or a bold opaque finish, knowing how much colourant to use makes a clear difference.
Recommended Dye Amounts for Epoxy Resin
For most liquid and paste colourants, adding between 1% and 5% dye by weight of the total mixed resin is advised. Use the low end (around 1%) if you want a subtle stained-glass effect, and move closer to the upper range for solid, opaque results. Avoid exceeding 5%, as too much pigment can affect the resin’s ability to cure fully.
- 1% for delicate, translucent colours
- Up to 5% for strong, opaque shades
- Do not go above 5% total pigment by resin mass
How to Blend and Test Your Colour
Always start by adding dye drop by drop, mixing thoroughly between additions. This allows you to check the growing intensity and avoid over-pigmenting. For custom colours, mix different shades separately first, then blend into your resin in small steps. If using a kit such as the Renaissance Set of Dyes, only a couple of drops are often enough for a marble effect.
When This Matters Most
Careful dye measurement matters in:
- Large pours or thicker castings, where over-pigmenting can inhibit curing
- Jewellery or fine art, where precise shades and transparency levels are needed
- Mixing with non-standard pigments—test first to ensure compatibility
