How to Safely Layer Thick Epoxy Resin without Overheating

Creating stunning thick epoxy resin projects like river tables or artistic pieces requires more than pouring a single deep layer. Careful layering is essential to avoid overheating, ensuring a clear, flawless result and maintaining the resin’s integrity.

Why Overheating Happens in Thick Pours

Epoxy resin undergoes a chemical reaction that releases heat as it cures. When poured too thickly or in large quantities, this exothermic reaction can build up excessive heat, potentially leading to discolouration, warping, or cracking. This is why many professional and hobbyist makers carefully manage layer thickness and timing.

Practical Layering Techniques for Thick Castings

For thick pours, always use a low-exothermic resin formulated for deep casting. For example, EpoxyTable 5-Five is suitable for layers up to 5 cm, while deeper projects may require a product like EpoxyTable 10-Ten. When working with pours beyond 5 cm or over 8 kg of mixed resin, pour in successive layers, waiting at least 6–8 hours between each layer. This approach ensures each layer cools and gels before adding more, reducing the chance of excessive heat build-up.

  • Never exceed the manufacturer’s recommended pour thickness or quantity per layer.
  • Work in a well-ventilated, temperature-controlled space.
  • Allow each layer to partially set (gel state) before proceeding with the next pour.

When Careful Layering Matters Most

If your project involves large surface areas, extra-deep castings, or volumes above the guidance of your chosen resin, careful layering is critical. Failing to do so risks cloudiness, heat marks, or structural issues in the cured piece.
