← Back to How to colour resin with acrylics?

Adding colour to resin can transform your projects, but the amount you use is critical for both appearance and proper curing. Careful dosing makes the difference between clear, vibrant results and cloudy, under-cured resin.
Why Precise Colourant Dosage Matters
With resin, less is more. Starting with just a few drops of colourant and building up slowly helps you achieve the shade you want while maintaining the resin’s performance. Too much pigment can inhibit the resin’s ability to set, leading to a tacky or cloudy finish and sometimes incomplete curing. By increasing the colourant gradually, you stay in control of the final look and avoid those pitfalls.
Guidance for Mixing & Colour Strength
For most resin colourants—such as the Colourfun Set—just a drop or two is often enough to richly tint 100g of resin. Highly concentrated products can colour litres of resin with minimal amounts, so always mix thoroughly and assess the result before adding more. It’s wise to avoid exceeding 5% colourant by weight of your total resin mixture to preserve clarity and ensure a reliable cure.
When Does Dose Really Matter?
- Clear & Crystal Effects: Even a slight overdose can reduce clarity. Use transparent colourants sparingly for glass-like results.
- Large Castings: Overloading pigment in thicker pours may trap heat, risking cure issues. Always mix in small increments.
- Opaque Projects: Solid colours require more pigment, but still add gradually, watching for any thickening or dullness in the mix.
