← Back to How to make a mould for a large resin cube?

Resin leaks can quickly ruin a cube casting project, especially when working with large pours. Securing your mould properly from the outset is key to achieving a flawless resin cube with sharp, crisp edges and minimal mess.
Seal All Joints and Edges
Before pouring resin, pay careful attention to every joint and corner of your cube mould. Use a high-quality silicone sealant, which provides both flexibility and a strong barrier against leaks. Apply the sealant generously along internal seams and external edges, smoothing it into any visible gaps with a gloved finger or small spatula. Allow the sealant to fully cure, as recommended by the product instructions, before beginning your resin pour.
Pre-made silicone moulds, such as the “Cube Mould” – Square Silicone Mould for Resin, 8.5×8.5cm, help minimise leakage risk, but always inspect for possible minor imperfections or wear if the mould has been used before.
Double-Check Before Pouring
After sealing, conduct a thorough inspection of your entire mould. Hold the mould up to the light and look for any missed pinholes, and gently press along the seams to check for movement or open splits. You can test the seal by pouring a small amount of water into the mould and watching for drips at the base and edges, being sure to dry it fully before switching to resin. Taking this extra step ensures peace of mind once you start your actual pour.
Choosing the Right Sealant and Resin
Not all sealants or resins are the same, especially for larger cubes. A neutral-cure silicone sealant is generally preferred, as it bonds well to most construction materials and resists chemical reaction with resin. Combine this with a suitable deep pour resin like “EpoxyTable 5-Five”, formulated for thick pours up to 5cm per layer, to minimise heat buildup and avoid pressure that can force leaks through poorly sealed joints.
