Why is My Resin Pendant Sticky After Curing?

If your newly made resin pendant feels sticky after curing, don’t worry – this is a common challenge with UV resins. Resolving tacky finishes is simple with a few easy steps and a bit of know-how.

Typical Causes of Sticky UV Resin

Most often, a tacky pendant surface indicates that the UV resin did not cure fully. Common reasons include applying a resin layer that is too thick or insufficient exposure to UV light. UV resin is designed to harden quickly in thin applications, usually around 2–3 mm per layer. When poured more thickly, light cannot penetrate deep enough for a complete cure, leaving the surface or inner resin soft and sticky.

How to Fix a Sticky Pendant

If your pendant is still sticky after its initial time under the lamp, simply return it to your UV lamp and cure it for an extra minute or two. Make sure the pendant is positioned so all sides receive light. For best results, turn the piece a couple of times or cure both front and back. If the layer is especially thick and remains tacky, gently wipe off any unset residue and apply a fresh, thinner layer of resin before curing again.

  • Keep layers thin: 2–3 mm at a time cures most effectively.
  • Use a strong UV lamp, like the 180W UV Lamp with Automatic Sensors, to ensure thorough curing.
  • Allow extra time if in doubt, especially for thicker or opaque designs.

When This Matters Most

This issue is most likely to occur when making solid or domed pendants, or when adding several layers in one go. Taking your time with curing – and working in stages – helps guarantee a glossy, solid finish every time.
