Timing is everything when it comes to releasing your resin jewellery from its mould. Knowing when your piece is ready to demould helps you achieve crisp edges and a glossy finish without damage.
Understanding Resin Curing Times
The correct demoulding time depends on the type of resin you’re using. Traditional epoxy resins for jewellery frequently require anywhere from 6 to 24 hours to cure, while specialist UV resins harden in just minutes under a UV lamp. It’s essential to consult the instructions for your specific resin, as some offer rapid formulas intended for quicker results.
- Epoxy resin: Usually requires overnight curing; some fast-setting options are ready in about 6 hours.
- UV resin: Can be demoulded in as fast as 2–3 minutes under a suitable UV lamp.
Checking for the Perfect Demoulding Moment
Your resin piece is ready to be removed from the mould when it feels fully solidified, non-tacky, and cool to the touch. Press gently on an inconspicuous edge—there should be no give or soft spots. Avoid trying to demould too early, as this can result in warping, fingerprints, or cloudiness.
If using a system like the UV–Creation fast acrylic resin, the rapid UV cure makes it easy to check hardening within minutes. For slower-curing epoxies, patience is key—set a timer and resist the urge to peek too soon.
When This Matters Most
Correct demoulding is particularly important for jewellery pieces requiring accurate shapes and high clarity. Rushing can mean marks, while waiting too long can sometimes make removal harder in very tight moulds.
