Deep pour epoxy projects, such as river tables and large artistic castings, rely on careful preparation. Avoiding common pitfalls ensures beautiful, long-lasting results. Here’s how to mix and pour deep epoxy resin the right way.

1. Measure Precisely

Using the correct ratio is essential—always follow the mixing instructions on your epoxy resin packaging. Most deep pour resins, such as the Epoxytable 10-Ten, specify exact weight or volume ratios. Use a reliable digital scale and mix the resin and hardener thoroughly to combine all components evenly, scraping the sides and bottom of the mixing container as you go.

2. Pour in Sensible Layers

For deep castings, especially those over several centimetres thick, it’s safer to pour in multiple layers. Deep pour epoxy is formulated to minimise heat build-up, but casting all at once can still lead to overheating or an imperfect cure. Allow each layer to partially set—often 6 to 8 hours—before adding the next. This technique helps ensure an even, bubble-free result while reducing the risk of warping or yellowing.

3. Mixing and Working Environment

Work in a dust-free environment at a stable room temperature, ideally around 20–25°C. Stir slowly and deliberately for at least 3–5 minutes to minimise air bubbles. If possible, allow mixed resin to rest briefly so trapped air can rise to the surface. Gently pass a heat gun over the surface after pouring to pop any remaining bubbles without disturbing the resin.

When This Matters

Thorough measuring and mixing become even more critical on large projects like tables or castings above 5cm thickness, where errors can be costly. Choosing the right product for your pour depth, like the “EpoxyTable 5-Five” for up to 5cm or Epoxytable 10-Ten for up to 10cm, ensures optimal performance and fewer issues.
