Mixing and Pouring Techniques
When working with resin, air bubbles are often introduced during mixing or pouring. To reduce the chance of bubbles forming, always mix your resin and hardener slowly and steadily, avoiding any vigorous agitation. Stirring with a gentle motion helps keep excess air out of the blend.
Pour the resin into your knife handle mould in a slow, controlled stream. Aim the stream against the side of the mould if possible, as this encourages trapped air to rise to the surface and escape before the resin sets.
Using Heat Safely
After pouring, a quick blast of gentle heat can help bring bubbles to the surface. Many makers use a heat gun or a small torch held several inches from the surface, briefly moving it across the resin to release any trapped air. Be cautious not to overheat a single area; always keep the heat source moving and avoid holding it too close to avoid damaging the mould or altering the resin’s properties.
Choosing a low-viscosity resin, such as EpoxyTable 5-Five, can also make bubble release easier, as thinner resin allows bubbles to escape more readily before curing.
When Bubble Prevention Really Matters
