Layering Resin for Thick Flower Art

Casting thick floral art in resin can create stunning, dimensional pieces, but it’s important to use proper layering techniques to achieve a flawless finish and prevent common issues.

Why Not Pour All the Resin at Once?

Attempting to pour a large amount of resin in one go for thick projects can cause overheating and a cloudy or uneven appearance. As resin cures, it generates heat—if too much is poured at once, this heat can’t dissipate efficiently, leading to yellowing, trapped bubbles, or even cracks. Instead, it’s advised to build up the thickness by pouring in controlled layers, letting each one cure before adding the next.

How to Layer Resin for Thicker Floral Castings

  • Choose a resin suitable for your project’s depth: for example, EpoxyTable 5-Five works well up to 5cm, while Epoxytable 10-Ten supports even deeper pours.
  • Pour the first layer, place your dried flowers, then allow this layer to partially cure—usually 6-8 hours, depending on product instructions.
  • Add subsequent resin layers, again letting each cure partially before pouring the next. This process avoids excessive heat build-up and ensures a clear, bubble-free finish.

When Layering Matters Most

Layering is especially important when preserving larger florals or creating keepsakes with significant depth. This approach also lets you position individual blooms carefully in each layer, adding dimension and control to your art.
