Choosing the right release agent is essential for successful epoxy resin casting. Wax, film, and silicone oil are all reliable options, but their performance depends on your project’s surface and desired finish.

How Each Release Agent Works

Wax creates a protective layer on your mould, preventing the resin from sticking. It works especially well on wood, metal, and plastic, offering heat resistance up to 180°C – ideal for many standard casting processes. If you want a straightforward solution for a range of surfaces, liquid waxes such as Global A2 Release Wax are easy to apply and dry quickly.

Film liners, like the “Shiny Shield” glossy release film, provide a flat, polished finish and are particularly suited to projects where you want a very smooth surface straight from the mould. Simply stick the film to the mould surface before pouring – it peels away cleanly when your work is cured.

Silicone Oil is brushed or sprayed inside your mould to form a barrier, making demoulding simpler and protecting silicone moulds during repeated use. It’s especially useful for complex shapes where removing set resin might otherwise risk tearing the mould.

How to Make the Right Choice

Choose wax for standard resin projects involving wood, metal, or plastic moulds, especially if heat resistance is needed.
Select release film when a flawless, glossy finish is vital and for quick changes between projects.
Go for silicone oil to maintain flexible silicone moulds and ease demoulding for detailed or delicate shapes.
