When considering an epoxy finish for table tops, many are curious about food safety. While resin creates a beautiful, durable surface, there are important factors to know regarding its suitability where food might be present.
What Does Food Safe Really Mean for Resin Surfaces?
“Food safe” means a material can be safely used for direct, prolonged contact with food. Most standard epoxy resins for furniture and artistic work, such as “Trasparente” epoxy resin, are not officially certified for food contact. This means that while cured epoxy forms a solid, non-porous barrier, it is best to avoid using these resins where food will touch the surface directly and regularly. Serving platters, chopping boards, and areas prepared specifically for food handling should use resins with explicit food safety certification, which are uncommon among furniture coatings.

Best Practices for Resin Table Tops
If you love the look and toughness of an epoxy table top, it can still be enjoyed in your dining space with a few precautions. Plates, glasses, and serving dishes can safely rest on the surface, but it is recommended to use placemats, chopping boards, or trays for direct food contact. For cleaning, use mild solutions to keep the surface intact—harsh abrasives or strong solvents may dull the shine or damage the coating.
When Food Safety Considerations Matter Most
If you are making tables for kitchens, cafes, or any setting where food is placed directly on the top, be extra cautious. Opting for a protective cloth or glass cover is a sensible choice for shared or commercial spaces. Decorative or display tables, where food is not commonly served directly on the resin, are less of a concern.
