← Back to How can you resin a wooden boat?

A flawless resin finish on a wooden boat not only protects but also looks impressive. However, bubbles and pooling can spoil the effect and reduce durability. With the right method and products, you can avoid common pitfalls for a more even, lasting result.
Minimising Bubbles During Application
Bubbles often occur when the resin mixes with air, is applied too quickly, or when the wood is porous and releases trapped air. To minimise these, always mix your chosen resin slowly and thoroughly, avoiding vigorous stirring. Before pouring, warm the resin containers slightly in hand-hot water to reduce viscosity—this helps air escape as you stir.
Pre-sealing your boat’s timber surface with a thin ‘priming’ coat is also recommended, particularly for dry or open-grain wood. This helps fill pores and prevents trapped air from rising during the main application. For example, EpoxyWood is formulated for deep penetration and sealing, ensuring a strong base and a smoother topcoat.

Getting an Even Finish—Avoiding Pooling
Pooling happens when excess resin collects in hollows or curves. To prevent this, apply resin in thin, even layers and use a foam roller or brush to spread it thoroughly. If your surface isn’t level, work slowly in sections and use a spatula or spreader to guide excess resin away from low spots.
Allow each layer to partially cure before applying the next. This approach is particularly helpful on sloping or vertical surfaces, giving you more control and reducing runs or uneven build-up.
When This Matters
Paying attention to bubbles and pooling is critical not just for aesthetics but also for durability, especially on hulls or decks exposed to water. A properly applied, bubble-free resin layer forms the best seal against moisture and prevents weak points that can lead to future damage.
