Surface Preparation: A Clean Slate

Start by making sure every surface the resin will touch is clean and free from dust, grease, or contaminants. Use a lint-free cloth and, if needed, a mild solvent to wipe down wood, silicone, or plastic items. For wooden projects, such as river tables, sanding any rough areas and removing residue makes a significant difference.

It’s also vital to check that the surface is flat and level. Uneven or tilted bases can result in resin pooling or thin spots, disrupting the water illusion you’re after.

Sealing & Mould Selection

Once clean, seal all porous surfaces with a suitable barrier—this is especially important for wood or MDF, which can absorb resin and cause cloudy patches or leaks. A thin layer of fast-drying sealant or resin itself can act as an effective barrier.

When selecting a mould, opt for high-quality silicone or smooth plastic forms. They should be free from scratches, as imperfections may transfer to your finished piece. Lightly coat the inside with a dedicated mould release agent to ensure a smooth demoulding and preserve the fine details of your water effect.

When Careful Prep Matters Most

• Deep pours (such as for river tables using Epoxytable 10-Ten) require extra attention to sealing and level support due to higher resin volume and weight.
• Thin projects are particularly prone to dust and debris errors, so a controlled, dust-free workspace is essential.
• If your project includes embedded items or layered effects, ensure each layer is adequately cured and sealed before proceeding to the next.
