Phosphorescent pigments, also known as glow-in-the-dark additives, are popular for adding luminous effects to resins and coatings. Understanding how long they emit light after charging is key to getting the best results in creative or practical projects.
Typical Glow Duration
After being exposed to a light source, phosphorescent pigment absorbs and gradually releases energy as a visible glow in the dark. The length of time it glows depends most strongly on how long and intensely the pigment was charged, and also the pigment’s concentration within your resin or medium. Under ideal conditions, the pigment can emit a visible glow for several hours, gradually weakening over time. Brighter and longer glow periods are achieved with higher concentrations and longer exposure to a strong light source.

Optimising Charge and Effect
For best results, expose your finished phosphorescent resin piece to a strong artificial or natural light for at least 10–20 minutes prior to use in the dark. Using a product such as the Phosphorescent Pigment – Glow-in-the-Dark Additive for Resin, Paint, and Varnish ensures high pigment concentration, which enhances both the intensity and duration of the glow effect. Consider applying lighter background colours in your design, as these can amplify apparent brightness.
When This Matters
Glow duration is especially significant for items meant to guide or highlight features in low light, such as emergency markers or decorative paths. In these cases, maximising pigment charge and applying enough pigment is essential to maintain visible performance through the night or until the piece can be recharged with light.
