When working with epoxy resin, understanding the separate stages of demoulding and full cure is key to successful results, whether you’re making jewellery or casting a table top.
What is Demould Time?
Demould time refers to when the resin has solidified enough to safely remove it from the mould without causing dents or fingerprints. At this point, the piece will hold its shape, but may still be soft or vulnerable to surface marks and bending. Depending on the resin formulation and room temperature, demould time can vary from as little as 6 hours for a fast-cure formula like ICreation Fast Epoxy Resin, to over 10 hours for certain deep pour resins. It’s best to wait at least the minimum recommended demould time listed by your product to avoid permanent distortions.
Achieving Full Cure
Full cure is when the epoxy resin develops its maximum hardness and durability. The resin will no longer feel tacky, has full structural strength, and can be sanded, polished, or placed under stress. Full cure typically takes much longer than demould time—ranging from 12 hours for rapid formulas to several days for deep pour projects. During this period, leave the cast piece undisturbed in a dust-free environment to ensure optimal clarity and resilience. Attempting to use or finish your epoxy before full cure can result in cloudiness, scratching, or loss of strength.
When This Matters
Knowing the difference is vital for scheduling steps in your project. For example, demoulding too early can bend or mar detailed castings, while handling before full cure may leave imprints or compromise the finish. Always consult your resin’s instructions for guidance on specific timings.
