Can I Apply a Second Resin Coat on My Tub?

Adding a second layer of resin is a tried and tested way to refresh or perfect the look of your tub. If the first coat needs extra coverage or a glossier finish, it’s entirely possible to apply another layer—just follow essential prep steps for a smooth result.

Prepping the Surface for a Second Coat

Once your first resin layer is fully cured (typically 24–48 hours, but always check your resin’s instructions), carefully prepare the surface. Lightly sand the cured coat using fine-grit sandpaper (approximately 320–400 grit) to remove gloss and provide a key for the new resin to bond to.

  • Wipe away dust and debris after sanding—use a slightly damp, lint-free cloth to avoid residue.
  • Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding, as moisture can affect resin adhesion.

Pouring the Second Resin Layer

Mix your resin carefully in the ratio specified by the product (for example, 100:60 for “Trasparente” Multipurpose Clear Epoxy Resin). Use a dedicated mixing container, such as a flexible mixing bucket, for smooth blending and easy clean-up.

  • Always pour slowly to minimise bubbles.
  • Do not exceed the recommended layer thickness (typically up to 2cm for Trasparente, or 1.5cm for Icrystal).
  • If desired, achieve a high-gloss, even finish by working in a dust-free space and covering your project while it cures.

When Adding a Second Coat Matters

Applying an additional resin coat is ideal if the first layer cured with minor imperfections, if extra thickness is needed for protection, or if you want to embed small decorative items. It’s also a good solution when the original surface looks uneven or requires extra depth and shine.
