Choosing an appropriate resin depth is key to successfully embedding animal specimens. The correct thickness preserves clarity and prevents issues like bubbles or overheating during the curing process.
Resin Thickness for Small, Medium, and Large Specimens
For small animal pieces, such as insects or feathers, a shallow layer of resin (around 1–2cm) offers adequate coverage and minimises the risk of bubbles. Products such as Icrystal epoxy resin or Trasparente are ideal, as they are formulated for excellent clarity and thin pours.
Medium-sized pieces may require slightly deeper casts, up to 2cm. Trasparente is specifically suitable for layers up to this thickness, preserving detail while maintaining a strong, glossy finish. For larger specimens, like small mammals or birds, or projects requiring impressive depth, you’ll need a deep pour resin such as EpoxyTable. These resins are designed for layers from 5–10cm and should be poured in stages if the project is particularly thick, following manufacturer guidelines for curing between layers.
Practical Advice for Successful Embedding
- Ensure your specimen is fully dry and sealed before embedding to avoid discolouration or bubbles.
- Always pour resin in thin layers for small items, and use deep-pour types for thickness beyond 2cm.
- Work in a dust-free area with good ventilation and use gloves and a mask for safety.
- Allow plenty of time for curing, especially when embedding thicker or larger animal pieces.
When Does Resin Depth Matter Most?
The thickness you choose can impact not only the clarity of your finished piece but also its structural integrity. Deep casting is particularly important when fully enclosing larger animals, while a thinner pour is best for delicate, detailed items where surface clarity is essential.
