Choosing the Right Resin for Large vs Small Spheres

Getting a flawless resin sphere depends not only on your mould and casting technique, but also on using the right type of resin for the size of the sphere. Here’s how to choose the correct resin for small and large projects so you achieve stunning results every time.

Resin Types for Small Spheres

For small resin spheres—typically those under 2–3 cm diameter—standard clear casting resins are usually a reliable choice. These resins cure quickly and are easy to work with, making them ideal for small jewellery pieces or decorative beads. Using a quality silicone mould with a highly polished surface, such as the “3 Sphere” – Silicone Mould for Jewellery and Crafts, helps to achieve a smooth finish and reduces the risk of sticking. Always pour slowly to minimise bubbles and avoid overfilling the mould.

Choosing Resin for Large or Deep Spheres

When creating large resin spheres, especially those thicker than 4–5 cm, it’s important to select a deep pour (sometimes called ‘casting’) epoxy resin designed for thicker applications. Unlike regular resins, deep pour formulas generate less heat during curing, helping to avoid overheating, cracking or yellowing. Products like “Epoxytable 10-Ten” are suitable for pours up to 10 cm thick, while “EpoxyTable 5-Five” supports depths up to 5 cm. For very large spheres, consider pouring in layers if the sphere exceeds the recommended thickness for a single pour.

When Resin Choice Matters Most

  • Small projects: Use standard clear resin for ease and speed.
  • Large, thick spheres: Always opt for deep pour epoxy to control heat and achieve bubble-free clarity.
  • Multi-purpose use: If your design includes layers or embedded objects, follow the manufacturer guidance for maximum pour depth and extend cure times as needed.
