← Back to How much resin and how many fibres?

Getting a crystal-clear, bubble-free finish is a top priority when working with resin and fibres for composites or craft projects. With careful preparation and the right methods, you can achieve smooth, professional results at home or in the workshop.
Why Do Bubbles Form in Resin Projects?
Bubbles often arise due to mixing, trapped air in the fibres, or rapid curing. When pouring resin over carbon fibre or fibreglass, tiny air pockets can get trapped between layers or in the resin itself. Vigorous stirring and pouring too quickly can also draw extra air in, which may become sealed during the curing process and appear as unwanted bubbles in the finished piece.

Techniques for Reducing Bubbles
- Measure and mix carefully: Use accurate ratios and mix resin and hardener slowly to minimise trapped air. Products such as the “Icrystal” Clear Epoxy Resin benefit from gentle mixing.
- Pre-wet fibres: If you’re working with technical fabrics, lightly moisten fibres with a thin layer of resin first, allowing air to escape before full impregnation.
- Apply in thin layers: Thinner applications enable bubbles to rise and pop before the surface gels. Both the “Carbon Resin” Epoxy and multipurpose resins like “Trasparente” support self-levelling finishes, encouraging air release.
- Work at room temperature: Curing at moderate temperatures allows for a slower set time, giving bubbles ample chance to escape before hardening.
- De-bubbling methods: After pouring, you can use a pin, toothpick, or gentle heat (such as a quick pass with a heat gun or torch held well above the surface) to release stubborn bubbles. Always exercise care to avoid overheating the resin or fibres.
When Is a Bubble-Free Result Most Important?
Projects where visual clarity and a flawless surface are crucial—like table coatings, jewellery castings, or transparent fibre overlays—benefit most from meticulous attention to bubble prevention. In high-strength composite work, a bubble-free finish also enhances both appearance and mechanical properties.
