Air bubbles can easily form when mixing resin with calcium carbonate for spotlight or deep casting projects, but with a few proven techniques you can achieve a smooth, professional finish.
Mixing Technique: Go Slow for Best Results
Rapid mixing is a common cause of trapped air. Stir your resin and calcium carbonate together slowly, using a gentle folding motion. Avoid whisking or vigorous agitation, as this draws in more air. Take the time to scrape the sides and base of your mixing vessel thoroughly.
Once blended, allow the mixture to settle for several minutes. This brief pause lets the majority of air bubbles rise naturally to the surface before you pour.
Releasing Bubbles Before Pouring
If you spot lingering bubbles after settling, you can use a heat gun held at a safe distance to sweep over the surface for a few seconds. This encourages bubbles to burst, leaving your mix clear. Never overheat the resin or focus the heat in one spot – gentle passes are all that’s needed to avoid disturbing the mix or affecting the cure.
For deep casting projects, such as those with Epoxytable 10-Ten, extra patience during mixing and settling pays off in the final clarity.
When Bubble-Free Mix Matters Most
Reducing bubbles is especially important for projects where clarity and even light diffusion are crucial, such as cast spotlights and artistic or furniture pieces where air pockets would be visible. Bubbles can also weaken structural integrity if left unchecked in larger pours.
