Demould and shape the handle

After your resin casting has fully cured, the next crucial stage is to demould and shape the knife handle. Achieving a neat, professional finish requires care, the right approach, and suitable materials.

Safe Demoulding Techniques

To ensure the best results, remove your handle from the mould within 12 hours of casting. Delaying this step could increase the risk of the resin adhering to the mould, especially if you’re using a silicone form. Gently flex the mould to help release the handle, avoiding tools that might damage the resin or the mould itself. Silicone moulds like the Rectangular Mould are especially effective for easy demoulding and reduce the risk of surface imperfections.

Initial Shaping and Trimming

Once demoulded, inspect the handle for any excess material or rough edges. Begin by trimming away flashes or droplets using a sharp craft knife or fine saw. For more substantial shaping, files and coarse sandpaper provide good control. Work gradually, regularly checking your progress, and always keep safety in mind by wearing gloves and a dust mask.

Sanding and Finishing

Smooth the surface by working through finer grades of sandpaper, progressing from 120 to 600 grit or higher, depending on your desired finish. For a glossy outcome, continue polishing with suitable buffing compounds or polishing kits. High-quality resins such as “Epoxytable 10-Ten” and “EpoxyTable 5-Five” offer an even clarity, making it easier to achieve a striking finish on your knife handle.

When This Matters

Clean demoulding and careful shaping are especially important if your knife handle features layered or embedded designs. Gentle handling prevents chipping, while precise sanding brings out the depth and clarity of coloured or wood-resin hybrid effects.
