Choosing the right release agent can make a big difference in your resin casting results. Below, we’ll break down how waxes, glossy films, and silicone oil each work to keep resin from sticking to your moulds.

Release Wax: Versatile and Heat Resistant

Release wax forms a protective barrier on the surface of moulds, helping resin to release cleanly once cured. It is especially useful for applications requiring higher temperatures (up to 180°C) and is suitable for moulds made from wood, metal, plastic, or cardboard. Global A2 Release Wax is designed for quick drying and offers flexibility across multiple surface types. When using wax, apply a thin, even layer and allow it to dry for a few minutes before pouring your resin.

Glossy Film: Smooth, Shiny Results Straight from the Mould

A glossy release film, like Shiny Shield, provides a physical layer between your resin and the mould. This film sticks smoothly to prepared frames or moulds, giving your finished piece a flat and mirror-like surface without the need for extra sanding or polishing. Apply by removing the backing and smoothing the glossy side onto your mould before pouring resin. The film is reusable and suitable for most deep pour projects with heat resistance above 100°C.

Silicone Oil: Mould Care and Flexible Releases

Silicone oil is ideal for maintaining silicone moulds used in resin work. By applying a small amount, you create a non-adhesive layer that makes removal of set resin much easier and protects the mould’s flexibility over time. Regular use can help keep your silicone moulds soft and extend their usable life, as well as contribute to achieving unique artistic effects in some creative applications.

When Differences Matter Most

For high-heat projects and multi-use across different mould materials, choose a reliable release wax.
If a flawless, glossy finish is your goal and you want to cut down post-cure work, glossy release film is best.
When using flexible silicone moulds, silicone oil preserves their condition and prevents sticking.
