After carefully embedding your animal specimen in resin, finishing and polishing your project is the key to a smooth, glossy effect. Achieving a professional look requires attention to detail and the right techniques so your creation will really shine.
Preparing the Surface: Light Sanding
As soon as your resin animal cast is demoulded, inspect the edges and flat areas for roughness or raised seams. Lightly sand these areas using very fine sandpaper (start with 800 grit and move to 1200 grit or higher) with a gentle touch. Focus only on the uneven edges; avoid the main surface if it’s already smooth, as aggressive sanding can dull the clarity. Sand using a circular motion and rinse with clean water to remove residue between grits.
Polishing for High Gloss
Once the edges are smooth, it’s time to restore the glass-like brilliance to your resin. Use a dedicated resin polishing compound applied with a soft, lint-free cloth or polishing pad. Work in small circles over the dull areas, gradually polishing until the surface regains transparency. Always avoid harsh abrasives on the flat faces, as this may permanently cloud the resin. For very intricate projects, a microfibre cloth and manual polishing give you maximum control.
Practical Finishing Tips
- Work in a dust-free area to avoid particles sticking to the polished surface.
- If scratches remain visible, repeat fine sanding and polishing steps lightly until satisfied.
- For a truly flawless look, some crafters apply a thin flood coat of clear resin, such as “Trasparente” epoxy, to restore the gloss.
When This Matters
Taking the time to finish and polish is essential for display pieces, keepsakes, or artistic items where clarity and smoothness show off the detail of the embedded animal. Skipping these steps may leave your work looking cloudy or unfinished.
