Proper Sealing is Crucial to Prevent Leaks in Large Resin Cube Moulds

When casting a large resin cube, any leaks from your mould can cause wasted material and incomplete results. Taking time to properly seal your mould is a key step for a seamless finish and a successful deep pour.

Why Sealing Your Mould Matters

Large resin pours apply significant pressure on mould seams, especially with deep castings. Even the smallest gap can result in slow leaks that go unnoticed until much of the resin has escaped. Leaks not only waste resin, but they also prevent your cube from curing with sharp edges and clean sides. Proper sealing is essential for maintaining the integrity of your formwork and keeping your workspace tidy.

Effective Sealing Techniques

  • Use Silicone Paste: Silicone sealant is a popular choice for builders of custom moulds. Apply a generous bead along all internal joints, corners, and anywhere panels meet.
  • Fit Release Film Carefully: A release film protects your base and helps remove your cured cube easily. Ensure the film overlaps slightly at joints and is pressed tight for full coverage.
  • Check for Gaps Before Pouring: After assembling your mould, inspect carefully from all sides. Filling with a small amount of water (and drying thoroughly after) or testing with a small batch of resin can quickly highlight weak spots.

Starter kits like the “River-Table” – Complete Kit for Creating Your First Epoxy Resin Table include dedicated silicone and release film, providing a reliable approach for beginners and advanced makers alike.

When Sealing is Most Important

Sealing should be a priority when pouring more than 2cm deep, or when working with large volumes of resin. For especially deep castings or heavy pours, take extra care at all seams and consider clamping panels to avoid bowing during the pour.
