← Back to How to Get Perfect Spheres with Resin?

If resin sticks to your sphere mould, removing your castings cleanly can be tricky and may spoil the finish. A few careful habits can prevent this and ensure a perfect, glossy shape each time.
Why Resin Sticks to Sphere Moulds
Resin often adheres to moulds when it is left to cure for too long, or if the mould’s surface has residue from past projects. While quality silicone moulds are designed to be non-stick, contaminants or overcured resin can lead to frustrating adhesion problems.
- Dried resin or dust in the mould can create rough patches or make it harder to release new castings.
- Leaving resin in the mould beyond the recommended time increases the risk of it sticking.
How to Prevent Sticking and Achieve Easy Release
The most reliable way to avoid sticking is to demould within about 12 hours of pouring, or as soon as the cast is firm but slightly flexible. This helps avoid over-bonding between resin and silicone. Clean your mould thoroughly with gentle soap and water after every use, and allow it to dry fully before casting again. For intricate details or repeated use, a light coat of mould release spray can add extra protection.
- Gently flex the mould to check if the resin has set but is not overly hard before removing.
- Choose easy-release, quality silicone moulds such as the “3 Sphere” – Silicone Mould for Jewellery and Crafts for best results.
When Fast Release Matters Most
Quick, easy demoulding is especially important for complex, shiny shapes where scratches or rough edges are unwelcome. If you are creating pieces for jewellery or to sell, taking care of the timing and condition of your mould makes all the difference to the finished quality.
