Seal or Prime Your Surface Before Pouring Resin

Proper preparation is vital for achieving beautiful and lasting resin art panels. Sealing or priming your surface before pouring resin will prevent absorption, improve adhesion, and help you achieve a flawless finish.

Why Sealing or Priming Matters

MDF, wood, and many art boards are porous. If left untreated, these materials can soak up resin unevenly or allow air bubbles to rise into your pour, leaving marks or dull patches. By sealing or priming, you create a stable, unified surface and minimise risks such as staining or warping.

  • Reduces resin absorption for even coverage
  • Blocks air bubbles from the substrate
  • Improves adhesion and surface durability

Choosing and Applying Your Sealer

Use a quality primer such as gesso or an MDF-specific sealer. Apply in thin, even coats and pay special attention to edges, as these are most exposed to resin absorption. Allow each coat to dry fully before adding the next. For MDF surfaces like the MDF Resin Art Board – Geode V3 – 60x40cm, 1–2 coats are usually sufficient. Lightly sand between coats for a smooth base, ensuring your resin pour will be level and clear.

When This Matters Most

Sealing or priming is crucial when working with highly absorbent boards (like MDF), large art panels, or if you plan to pour multiple resin layers. Taking this step will help maintain the integrity of both your artwork and panel for years to come.
