Preparing and Levelling the Substrate

Use a spirit level and a suitable levelling compound to create a perfectly even surface, as resin will highlight any imperfections. Take your time at this stage; any flaws can be difficult to correct later and could affect water drainage or cause pooling over time.
Applying Effective Moisture Barriers
Resin shower trays are exposed to moisture daily, so adding a robust moisture barrier is essential. Depending on your subfloor, apply a compatible primer or waterproof membrane before any resin work. This extra layer helps to prevent the ingress of water into the subfloor, safeguarding against swelling or mould. For particularly damp environments, ensure every inch is properly coated and edges are sealed.
Practical Resin Application Tips
Once your substrate is flat and waterproofed, you can move on to selecting an appropriate resin system. For deep, durable castings in shower trays, consider a product like EpoxyTable 5-Five for up to 5cm layers, or the “Epoxytable 10-Ten” for thicker pours. Always mix and pour as recommended, and follow curing times to achieve a robust, even finish.
When This Matters Most
If your subfloor is in a humid room or ground level, or if you’re working with materials prone to movement like timber, strict moisture control and accurate levelling become even more critical to prevent issues in the finished tray.
