Careful timing is essential when removing a resin cube from its mould to maintain its shape and achieve a flawless finish. Proper unmoulding also helps preserve embedded items like flowers within the resin.
Understanding Cure Times
Resin must be fully cured before you attempt to unmould your cube. Always refer to the specific guidelines provided by your resin manufacturer, as cure times can vary between products. For instance, some deep pour resins may require up to 48 hours or more, particularly for thicker casts. Unmoulding too early can cause unwanted surface marks, deformation, or stickiness, which can be difficult to correct afterwards.
- Check the manufacturer’s recommended cure duration.
- Consider the temperature and humidity of your workspace as they affect curing speed.
- Allow extra time for thick or deep casts, like those using EpoxyTable 5-Five.
Techniques for Easy Removal
After the resin is fully cured, gently flex the mould to loosen the cube. Silicone moulds, such as the Cube Mould, are non-stick and reusable, making demoulding easier and reducing the risk of damaging your piece. If the cube resists, let it rest in the mould for a few more hours before trying again—forcing removal may mar the cube’s surface.
When This Matters
Patience during unmoulding is especially important for projects where clarity and finish are vital, like resin cubes with embedded flowers or delicate objects. Rushing this step can diminish the visual effect of your work, requiring extensive finishing work to recover the piece’s appearance.
