How to Avoid Bubbles in Cast Resin Projects

Resin casting can produce beautiful, crystal-clear pieces – but only if you keep bubbles at bay. Knowing how to prevent and remove air bubbles makes all the difference for a smooth, professional finish.

Choose the Right Resin Formula

Bubbles can be minimised by selecting a resin specifically formulated for low viscosity or bubble resistance. Products such as Liquidissima are designed to flow easily into tight corners and detailed moulds, reducing trapped air. For large or deep projects like river tables, deep pour resins such as EpoxyTable 5-Five are best for slow, consistent curing and allow air to rise out before setting.

Pouring and Mixing Techniques

To limit bubbles, mix your resin and hardener slowly, gently folding the two together without whipping. Let the mixed resin rest for a minute or two, allowing some air to escape. When pouring, do so slowly and in stages, holding the container close to the mould to help avoid splashing air into the mix.

Pour in a warm, dust-free environment for optimal results.
In deep casts, pour in thin layers if possible and wait between pours to permit air release.

Effective Bubble Removal Methods

Even with care, some bubbles may remain on or just below the resin’s surface. Sweep a flame torch or heat gun lightly over the surface immediately after pouring to break surface bubbles. For very small or intricate items, a dome cover can help by maintaining a warmer, still air space over your work so bubbles rise and pop more freely. Always keep safety guidance in mind—ventilate your workspace and avoid overheating the resin.
