← Back to How to colour resin?

Before pouring your coloured resin into a mould or onto a surface, it’s important to test your chosen shades. Testing helps ensure you achieve the right look and avoid surprises once your resin cures.
Why Test Colours First?
Resin colours can look quite different when wet compared to how they appear after curing. Variations in resin brand, pigment type, and even the mould material can all influence the final result. By doing a small test mix, you avoid disappointments and costly mistakes, especially when working on detailed or artistic projects.
How to Test Resin Colours
- Mix a small batch: Combine a little resin with your chosen colourant, such as the easy-to-blend Colourfun Set or Magic Crystal dye.
- Apply to a disposable surface: Use a piece of acetate or silicone to pour a thin layer, as this mimics most castings or coatings.
- Check cured colour: Let the sample set fully. This allows you to assess true depth, opacity, and transparency once cured.
- Make adjustments: If needed, tweak your mix before starting your main pour for confidence in your final project.
When This Matters Most
Testing is especially helpful for projects where accuracy or translucence is crucial, such as resin jewellery, geode effects, or matching specific shades. Even for simple crafts, testing a new colourant can save time and materials.
