Pour and Cure Resin in Stages for Wooden and Resin Tables

Achieving a flawless wood and resin table often means pouring and curing your resin in several stages. Understanding when and how to do this helps avoid common issues such as overheating, cracks, or bubbles during deep casting.

Why Stage Your Resin Pours?

Pouring all your resin at once can lead to excessive heat, unsightly bubbles, or cloudiness—especially for thick river tables. By dividing the resin into manageable layers, each with its own curing period, you maintain better control over clarity and finish, and reduce the risk of problems as the project cures.

Recommended Pour Depths and Curing Times

  • Up to 5cm at a time: Deep pour resins, such as EpoxyTable 5-Five, are formulated to be safely poured in layers up to 5cm. Thicker pours should be split into multiple applications.
  • Pours above 5cm or large surface area: For projects exceeding these dimensions or a side over 100cm, it’s crucial to pour in layers—typically with a 6–8 hour interval between applications, as recommended for products like “Epoxytable 10-Ten”.
  • Smaller pours: If using a general casting resin, keep each layer below 2cm to ensure proper cure and finish.

Practical Steps for Multi-Layer Casting

  • Prepare your formwork and ensure it is well sealed before starting.
  • Mix and pour your first layer, allowing it to partially cure (usually until it is firm but still tacky to the touch, which helps each successive layer bond).
  • Repeat the process, pouring new layers as needed, while maintaining recommended waiting times between each pour.
  • Sand lightly between layers if required, and always follow the detailed instructions supplied with your resin kit for the best outcome.

When This Matters Most

Staged pours are crucial for large or deep river tables, projects using more than 8kg of resin, or whenever you aim for perfectly clear, bubble-free results. This approach helps ensure your effort is rewarded with a professional finish.
