Demoulding Resin Table Best Practices

Removing your resin table top from its mould is a key stage in any wood and resin project. Timing this carefully helps you achieve crisp edges and protects the quality of your finished surface.

Knowing When the Resin Is Ready

The ideal time to demould your resin table top is after the resin has completely cured and feels solid all the way through. For deep pour epoxies commonly used on tables, this process can take anywhere from 48 to 72 hours. Always consult your chosen resin’s specific product guidance, as different brands and formulations may require more or less time. Premature demoulding increases the risk of surface marks, sticky patches, or even bending.

Demoulding Techniques for a Clean Release

When ready, gently separate the mould. Use release films or appropriate sealants during formwork construction, such as those found in the “River-Table” complete kit, to make removal easier and avoid damaging your table’s edges. Work slowly along the sides, and support the resin as you lift it away, especially with larger table tops. If any resistance is felt, double-check that the resin is fully set.

What to Do After Demoulding

Once demoulded, inspect your table top for sharp edges or small imperfections. Light sanding and polishing can enhance clarity and smoothness. Kits with polishing materials offer a practical solution for this finishing step. Always ensure a dust-free environment and use the appropriate grits in sequence. Preparing your base, such as using an MDF Board Base for stability, also helps prevent movement during finishing touches.

When This Matters Most

Demoulding at the right time is especially important if your project features thick pours or intricate shapes, as these are more susceptible to warping or sticking. Proper timing protects all your previous effort and investment in premium epoxy resin and base materials.
