Pouring Resin for a Table: One Go or in Stages?

Planning a resin table project? A frequent question for beginners and pros alike is whether to pour all the resin in one go or build it up in layers. Getting this right is key to achieving a flawless finish and avoiding common mishaps.

Why Deep Pours Need Staging

When creating a resin table, especially those with thick layers or river table designs, pouring the resin in stages is essential. Epoxy resin generates heat as it cures—a process known as exothermic reaction. If you pour too much resin at once, excessive heat can build up, leading to yellowing, cracks, or trapped bubbles. Working in stages allows each layer to cure in a controlled manner, resulting in a clearer, more durable finish.

Recommended Layer Thickness and Timing

Most deep pour epoxies, like EpoxyTable 5-Five, are formulated for layers up to 5cm thick per application. For extra-deep effects, products such as “Epoxytable 10-Ten” can extend this to 10cm, but even then, it’s best to pour in increments. Allow each layer to partially set (typically 6–8 hours) before adding the next. This approach helps minimise bubbles and ensures even curing throughout.

Practical Tips for Staged Pours

  • Measure and mix resin for each layer separately to maintain accuracy.
  • Use a heat gun or torch carefully to remove surface bubbles after each pour.
  • Consider room temperature: cooler conditions slow curing and may require longer between layers.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines closely for each product used.

When This Matters Most

Staging your resin pours is particularly important if your project exceeds standard thickness (above 2–5cm), or if you’re working on large surfaces and want to prevent flaws that are difficult to fix later.
