← Back to How to make wide-hole beads with resin?

Sticky or tacky beads are a frequent issue for resin crafters, especially when curing doesn’t go as planned. Here’s a practical guide to resolve sticky resin and achieve glossy, fully cured beads for your jewellery projects.
What Causes Sticky Resin Beads?
The most common reason your resin bead remains sticky is either undercuring or an incorrect mix of resin and hardener. Epoxy resins and UV resins rely on very specific conditions to cure fully—deviating from the recommended ratios, timing, or light exposure can leave your beads soft or tacky to the touch.
- Incorrect Mixing: For epoxies, mismeasuring resin and hardener disrupts the chemical reaction needed for a solid cure. Always use the ratio specified by your resin kit, such as the simple 1:1 mix found in the Evershine Collection Epoxy Resin Kit.
- Undercuring: UV resins like UV–Creation require sufficient light strength and duration. Ensure your piece is exposed to UV lamp light (365–405 nm, 3W to 36W) for the full recommended time, usually 2–3 minutes per layer.
How to Remedy and Prevent Sticky Resin
If your beads are still sticky, don’t worry—there are a few effective ways to fix and prevent this problem in the future:
- Double-check your ratios: Always measure carefully, whether you’re using a dedicated kit or loose resin supplies.
- Increase curing time: For UV resin, try curing for a minute or two longer, and place the bead close to the lamp. For epoxy, allow extra time—most require at least 24 hours for a complete cure.
- Avoid thick layers: Apply resin in thin coats, curing each layer fully before adding the next. Overly thick pours can remain sticky in the centre.
- Check environment: High humidity or low temperatures can affect curing. Work in a dry, warm space where possible.
When Does Tackiness Matter Most?
Sticky beads can collect dust, dull quickly, or fail when assembled into jewellery. This is especially important for wide-hole beads or statement pieces that get handled regularly. Resolving the stickiness ensures durability and a high-quality finish in your final designs.
