Types of Resin and Their Home Safety
Most resins on today’s market are formulated for creative use, but their safety profiles differ. Mineral resins, such as NatuResin, are water-activated and non-toxic, making them particularly well-suited to home studios, even when handled without gloves. UV resins, often used for fine jewellery and small crafts, are generally considered safe for home use with minimal precautions – these are one-part, ready-to-use formulations that cure rapidly under UV light, like UV–Creation. Polyurethane resins, however, require careful attention, especially before curing, due to the chemicals they contain.
Safe Handling and Precautions
For water-based mineral resins and most UV resins, simple safety measures such as wearing old clothing, ensuring good ventilation, and cleaning surfaces after use should suffice. Avoid direct skin contact or inhalation of fumes with any resin. Polyurethane resins—often chosen for detailed or rapid prototyping—should only be used with gloves and, ideally, a respirator while mixing, as the isocyanates in their uncured state can be harmful. Fully cured pieces from all these resin types can usually be handled safely.
