Can I Build a Curved Table Mould?

Creating a curved table mould for your wood and resin project opens up exciting design possibilities—whether it’s a soft river bend or dramatic organic shapes. While more challenging than straight-edged frames, it can be achieved with careful planning and the right materials.

Choosing Flexible Mould Materials

To form a curved edge, the mould needs to flex into your chosen shape but still hold firm against resin pressure. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic is a popular choice as it can be shaped along gentle curves and resists resin adhesion. Other options include flexible acrylic sheets or thin melamine, though these may require extra bracing. Whichever you choose, ensure joints and seams are tightly sealed to prevent leaks—specialised silicone sealant, like that included in the ‘River-Table’ Complete Kit, is particularly helpful for this task.

Securing and Shaping Your Curve

Curved formwork typically needs strong support to avoid movement or bulging while resin cures. Fix the curved panel to a stable base—such as a sturdy MDF board—and use clamps, weights, or box framing around the outside of the mould to keep your outline true. Pre-plan your curve and test fit materials before pouring resin to ensure a smooth, consistent profile.

Resin Pouring Considerations for Curved Moulds

When casting into a curved mould, pour the resin in stages if your project is particularly deep, as recommended for most table pours over a few centimetres. Deep pour resins like EpoxyTable 5-Five help minimise bubbles and maintain clarity. Always follow product instructions regarding maximum pour depth and allow plenty of curing time, as the shape of the mould may influence how heat and bubbles accumulate.

When This Matters

  • Curved moulds are ideal when you want a softly flowing ‘river’ table or to mimic natural wood edges.
  • Complex curves require extra time for setup and additional care in sealing and supporting the mould.
