Are you considering UV resin for embedding items such as flowers, small trinkets, or keepsakes? UV resin can be handy, but it’s important to know its limits before beginning your project.
When to Use UV Resin for Embedding
UV resin is ideal for small, shallow embedding projects where rapid curing and fine detail are essential. Common examples include jewellery pieces less than a centimetre thick, cabochons, and charm making. The fast cure under a UV lamp is a major advantage for intricate work or when you need speedy results. However, UV resin is not designed for larger pours or deeper items. Its curing process is limited by how far UV light can penetrate, usually restricting layer thickness to just a few millimetres.
Better Options for Deeper Embedding
If you need to embed objects in resin deeper than a few millimetres—for example, flowers in paperweights or items in coasters—consider using a clear epoxy resin instead. Products like the “Trasparente” Multipurpose Clear Epoxy Resin are formulated for pours up to 2cm. For even deeper projects, such as tables or large decorative pieces, specialist deep pour epoxy resins can go up to 5cm or even 10cm in a single layer. These two-part resins cure evenly and prevent issues like incomplete hardening or yellowing often encountered with UV resin in thick applications.
When This Matters
- Small, thin casts: UV resin is quick, neat, and excellent for shallow embedding.
- Deeper, larger projects: Choose epoxy resin to ensure a solid, bubble-free, and long-lasting finish. Using the wrong product could result in incomplete curing or a cloudy finish around your embedded objects.
