← Back to How to polish two-component resin

Polishing resin by hand is a practical option when you don’t have access to a machine polisher. While it can take more time and physical effort, careful manual polishing can still improve clarity and shine on your resin projects.
Manual Resin Polishing: What to Expect
It is possible to polish two-component resin by hand, but achieving a mirror-like gloss finish usually requires patience and attention to detail. Manual polishing tends to be more labour-intensive and may not reach the same high-gloss as machine polishing, especially on larger or heavily scratched areas.
How to Polish Resin by Hand
- Stepwise Sanding: Begin by smoothing imperfections with fine sanding pads, such as Ebonite Abralon pads, progressing through higher grits for best results.
- Polishing Compounds: Apply a quality resin polish, like Epoxy Polish, using a soft, lint-free cloth or a manual pad holder to work the surface evenly.
- Consistent Pressure: Keep pressure even and move in a circular motion to avoid uneven glossy patches.
Hand polishing works best on smaller or less complex resin pieces. For larger surfaces, using dedicated polishing pads rather than a plain cloth will yield better results, even without a machine.
When Manual Polishing Matters
Hand polishing is ideal when you only have a few items or delicate resin pieces, or where machine access is limited. It can also be useful for quick touch-ups or areas where detailed control is necessary, such as resin jewellery or small decorative items.
